I started a new blog recently to chronicle my hopeful transition to film. I used film for years and then transitioned to digital because it was what clients wanted. It was fun and gave me new options. I spent many days in classes learning how to capture using a DSLR and post process images in Photoshop. It was fun, but I always longed for simpler times.

So, I decided to do what I love and find clients who love it too. So, take a look at the new blog to see some recent examples and read more about my motivation.

Pictures in the Poinsettias

I have been asked by Carmen of Nectar and Company to join forces with Georgia Greenhouses for a funraiser to benefit Jay's Hope, a local childhood cancer charity. Easy Location Lighting

This post contains the images from my most recent FREE photography class. This class delt with improving images by understanding available light. Only a camera and lens were used to create the images. Well, there were also a few trees and walls.

The first image is an example of what not to do. This was taken in direct sunlight. Don't do this! This will accentuate everything wrong with your subject.

In this image, I used a tree to block most of the sunlight. This improves the image, but it can be better.

Now, by changing the subject's position and my position, we can use the tree to create subtractive lighting. The tree creates a shadow on one side of the subject's face. This adds dimension to the subject. Also notice that the subject's nose is pointed away from the tree towards the light. This has the added benefit of making the face look thinner.

The next image illustrates a common problem. The sunlight is coming through the leaves of the tree creating dappled shade. This creates highlights and shadows that distract from the subject.

By turning the subject 180 degrees and rotating my position, the dappled shade is on the subjects back improving the image.

In this image, I used the sunlight to create a rim light on the subject's hair. This creates separation between her and the background. Additionally, there is a tree, camera left, creating a shadow on one side of the subject's face.

The next two images use the same principles. There is a wall on camera right on the first and a tree on camera left in the second.

This image illustrates the concept of depth-of-field that we discussed. This image was taken at f4. You can see as the leaves on the wall become more in focus as they get closer the the subject.

Solid Advice

I love Disney stuff from the 60's. I love the Wonderful World of Disney with the future played out in animation. I also loved hearing the old animators talk about how they created the now legendary characters that made Disney famous. Ward Kimball was one of my favorites.

So, I was so thrilled to find this Kimball quote on Tim Gruber's blog. It is an excerpt from a letter he wrote to a young man who wanted to be an animator. It is great advice no matter your vocation or hobby.

Find inspiration and knowledge in unexpected places. Don't get set in your ways too early. It is a slow process that cannot be cheated.

What I am trying to say is that becoming an animator is a growth process that involves basic curiosities for all things, because man, animation is just not making things move, it is THINKING, THINKING, THINKING! You can’t know enough about everything. Curiosity is the key word. See everything! Do everything!

Learn from others, BUT DON’T COPY THEM! Try to retain your individualism while learning the basic rules. Don’t become dogmatic because you’re going to change your mind about what you like and what you dislike hundreds of times before you’re thirty! This will happen if you develope your imagination along with your curiosity.

You can read all the animation books in the world but learning the art has to be done while doing.

I love online quizes. Unfortunately, most require you to enter your cell phone number and pay for a text to receive your results. This is different. This is a photography quiz created by Zack Arias, a music photographer and lighting teacher in Atlanta, that gives you your results at the end. According to Zack, you should get at least 85% correct if you want to be a professional photographer.

Paper is Beautiful!

I happened across a blot this week, that combines two of my loves...weddings and paper.

Oh So Beautiful Paper-A Celebration of all Things Paper is a blog with a very clear mission. Best of all, it is a great resource for brides looking for something a little different in the world of wedding invitations. The blog has a gallery of real invitations as well as links to invitation designers and printers. I firmly believe that most people don't realize all the options available. OSBP solves that problem.

My favorite real invitation is a story book that contains all the information for the guests. I know the guests who received that book knew that the wedding wasn't to be missed! I can only imagine how amazing the wedding was if the couple put that much thought into the invitation.

Fancy Book Learning...Again!

While I'm not a big fan of traditional education, I do believe learning is important. I spend quite a bit of time at seminars, workshops and conventions. I feel this continuing education is a huge part of my success.

So, Monday, I had the pleasure of attending the WPPI Road Trip in Atlanta. It was a welcome chance to learn more about my business and craft from some amazing photographers. WPPI assembled some of the Who's Who of the photographic world to share their knowledge. I learn so much, and I'm even working on some new products and sessions. Stay tuned!

Best of all, I got to "road trip" with several wonderful Middle Georgia Photographers: Amanda and Jared Lindley, Christina Young, and Jenny Prater.

Special thanks to Jared for his expert driving. The trip home was quite memorable!

Something Very Cool This Way Comes

So, being a photographer makes me keenly interested in all things visual. While not a movie aficionado, I do love great cinematography. It is had to find, but it is so rewarding to watch a movie where as much thought went into the filming as the script. I also enjoy old movies. As many of you know Hitchcock is king.

Well, a very cool one time only event is coming next week. On Wednesday, September 23rd at 7pm, The Wizard of Oz is being shown around the country to commemorate the 70th anniversary. The cool part is that the movie has been completely restored for the Blu-Ray release the following week. The movie has been scanned from the original film, cleaned, and color corrected. It is being said that this version of the movie is better than what most movie-goers saw in 1939.

Locally, the only theater participating is the Galleria Mall Stadium Cinemas in Warner Robins. Click here to buy tickets.

Quirky allows would-be inventors to submit their ideas for consideration. The ideas are then posted for voting. The top ideas go on through evaluation, naming and research. The resulting products are produced and sold on the quirky website.

I discovered quirky because of the Power Curl. The Power Curl organizes your Apple MagSafe cables. For anyone with a recent Apple laptop, this is a problem. Thankfully, someone had a solution and found quirky. There are several other products already available including the DigiDudes and Split Stick.

We Don't Appreciate What We Have Until It Is Gone!

Polaroid announced it would stop producing film early last year. An era came to an end...or did it.

Remaining Polaroid film and cameras are available. Some of it has gotten quite expensive, though. Film that could be found at the drugstore is now available only at special camera shops and online retailers for a premium. There are also new websites dedicated to saving Polaroid. The Impossible Project has even gone as far as to buy some of the equipment from Polaroid and has taken on the task of reinventing "Polaroid" film. Thankfully, this is not the only option.

Unknown to most Americans, Fuji produced instant film in Japan but was unable to sell it in the US. Due to the demise of Polaroid, the Fuji film is now available. Unfortunately, it is not available in the popular 600 or Spectra formats. It is, however, available for professional Polaroid backs as well as Fuji's own line of cameras.

I purchased a Polaroid 600se camera last year and have been experimenting with new options. I'm even working on the idea of offering an original series of Polaroids as part of a special session. If you are interested in being a guinea pig, let me know.

Imaging USA

If you want to be a professional photographer or you are already a professional photographer, you are a fool if you don't attend Imaging USA!

Imaging USA is the national convention of the Professional Photographers of America. I have attended each convention for the last 6 years. It has changed my life and been the biggest influence in my career. Each year, a variety of photographers from a variety of disciplines take time to share their expertise with the attendees. Some of the biggest names in the industry teach on subjects from marketing, photography, and digital workflow to name just a few. There is also a huge trade show filled with the latest products all geared towards the professional photographer. Every camera company, studio strobe manufacturer, and Photoshop plugin maker is there. There are also several parties and a featured speaker. Last year, Ann Geddes spoke about her life and career.

Best of all, Imaging USA 2010 will be in Nashville, TN and it only costs $219 for two people if one is a PPA member. Mark your calendars. I look forward to seeing many of you there.

Images From Last Night's Class

Thank you to all who came out last night. Here are some of the images with explanations of what I was doing. I've edited the images slightly, but they are uncropped.

The first shows the concept of subtractive lighting we discussed. The large wall on the left creates the shadow on her right cheek. Also notice the triangle of light on her right cheek.

This image was backlight (notice the highlight on her hair). It also demonstrates the concept of layering elements in your background.

The next three show a variety of settings. The first is taken with no flash. The second adds flash at -1 output. The last was taken with flash set at normal output, but in Program mode instead of Manual.

I'm limited to 5 images, so check the other posts for the other images.

More Images From The Class

So, the first two are examples of my trying to overpower the sun...without success. The first is a more normal exposure with flash. The second was taken at f16 at 1/250 sec with the flash set to +3 output.

The next image was taken with fill flash (-1output). The image after that was taken without flash. While the image was much brighter out of the camera, it is very similar after post processing in Adobe Camera RAW. Also, notice how the colorful bush in the background balances the composition.

Lastly, this image has a very dark background and allows Lacey to become more prominent. Also, the large tree creates an even light for our subject. The texture of the tree is also accentuated by the light of the sun raking across it.

Two Last Images

Because the sun was below the horizon, the girls were able to look in the direction of the sun without squinting. This provided for a soft, flattering light. Also, you can notice the layers of background elements as well.

Last but not least, this is my favorite image. Lacey has and amazing expression and I love the way the bush frames her. It is a very simple image with no flash, but I think it was the most successful of the afternoon.

Should An Artist Be Judged By A Single Work?

Dave Matthew's Band released a new album today. It is titled Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. Dave recently stated in an interview that if he never records another album, he hopes no one listens to any of his other albums.

What if Picasso was only his blue period? What if Dali was only his surrealist work? (I actually prefer his earlier work.) What if Ansel Adams were only Moonrise, Hernandez?

Art is not a destination. It is a journey. These artists are not great for a single work or even a single collection of works. They are great for their lifetimes of work.

Dave Matthew's Band has created many great albums. They wouldn't be a great band if Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King were there only album. Many bands record a great album. Very few repeat the feat. Even fewer do so as often as DMB.

I wouldn't want to be judged by a single image or even a single album. I have created images that I feel express my view of the world. I have created images that make me very happy. I have not created an image that I would want to define my career. I don't know that I ever will.

Apple on the Cheap-ish

So, as many of you know, I am a fervent Apple Fan Boy. I suffered in the PC world for many years. About 6 years ago, I saw the light. It took time to learn the new system, but I have experienced very few problems and NO viruses. So, that means, I've worked more WITH my computers than ON my computers.

One constant complaint is Apple computers are too expensive. I think one truth is that you will spend more on an Mac. You can buy a cheap PC. You can't buy a cheap Mac....or can you?

I have only purchased one new Mac. It was the first. I still have my first eMac. It works great. It has never been to the shop. It has never had a virus or malware. It is running the latest version of the Mac operating system. Since then, I have either purchased used Macs or refurbished Macs from Apple. Here are the links to my two favorite options.

Good for the Soul

For those who have had the distinct pleasure of taking Economics at Mercer from Dr Mounts, the phrase should be familiar. He would often tell my class of the opera being played on public radio on Saturday afternoon eventhough none of us seemed to care. He would finish with "It is good for the soul!"

I never got into opera, but Dr Mounts did explain many wonders of human behavior to me. He also made me realize that there were other pursuits besides academia. I think of him to this day when I take time from my day to enjoy art, music, literature, or any other creative expression. It is good for the soul.

The most recent was the Terracotta Army at the High Museum. The exhibit has closed, but I'm glad I had the opportunity to see it. I was amazed by what a 2000+ year old culture was able to create. Beautiful, intricate jade and bronze pieces along side life-sized clay warriors that have survived to this day.

Which of our creations will survive that long?

Very Interesting Read!

While waiting on my flat tire to be fixed, I read a very interesting story in Inc. Magazine. The article by Joel Spolsky, explains why Circuit City failed...and, it wasn't for the reasons given by the CEO. Simply, Circuit City treated its employees and customers poorly. They had inferior products at high prices with poor customer service. There was no reason to go to Circuit City when Best Buy was around the corner.

Joel then gives an example of a company that offers great products, low prices, and amazing customer service. B&H is an institution in the professional photographic world. Located in Manhattan, this electronics super store offers everything from point-and-shoot cameras to broadcast quality video cameras to computers to HDTVs. I my experience, they have what I want when I want it. While I've never had the pleasure of visiting the physical store, Joel does a great job explaining what makes it unique. Anything you might want to fondle can be brought up from the basement warehouse by dumbwaiter and conveyor belt. Products you want to purchase travel overhead by conveyor belt to the cashier without you having to carry it. Best of all, the salespeople are pleasant and knowledgeable. Joel even tells of the time a B&H salesperson saved him $500.

What is success without friends to share?

I believe someone much wiser originally penned this sentiment, but I believe it to be true. The last few weeks have proven it. On several occasions, I have spent the day with great friends who happen to be full-time photographers. I remember years ago when I would drive to Atlanta by myself for a photography or Photoshop class. Those days are no more. Now I have a group of fellow photographers who are happy to join me. The drive can be as educational as the class. The drive is always more fun...and more inspirational.

I wonder where I would be if I had these friends years ago. I know I am better for their companionship, knowledge, and encouragement. How much better could I have been if I found them sooner? You are so much a part of what I have. Thank you.

USA Does it Again!

I mentioned once before on my blog about the USA network's Character Approved promotion. Now they have unveiled their Character Project. Eleven photographers were asked to travel to different regions of the country to capture slices of life. They have created images that elevate the everyday to the extraordinary. Some of the images remind me of Avedon, while others look more like the cover of Rolling Stone. Oddly, it appears many of them are shooting FILM! I had the pleasure of being a part of the taping for a TV commercial for the Telegraph's A Gift for Mom promotion. It involved a half dozen or so photographers acting very silly. I can't wait to see the finished product. It should start airing on WPGA in the next few days.

Of course, being a photographer, I was very interested in the lighting. They do amazing things with very little. It inspired me to try some new lighting ideas myself. Stay tuned.

Classics in Lego

Finding the right model can be difficult. The right location takes time to find. Then you have to arrange hair, makeup, and wardrobe. Mike Simpson has solved these problems. He uses Legos. Best of all, he uses Legos to recreate iconic images. "Behind the Gare Saint Lazare" by Bresson and "VJ Day Times Square" by Alfred Eisenstaedt or two of my favorites (click the title of this post to see the images). Having to create a renowned image with very simple "models" and "locations" requires you to distill the idea to a few key components. It allows for the beauty and simplicity to come through without unneeded detail. These images are simply amazing!

Ellen and Anthony are Engaged!

This is why I love my job. My day started normally enough. By lunch, I had found my way into shooting an engagement...not and engagement session, but an actual engagement at the Blacksmith Shop. Bubba, the Vietnamese Southern cook from Houston

According to John T. Edge, local boy made good, Bubba is evidence of what makes the South great. French restaurants in New York are manned by extremely talented Mexican cooks, so why can't a Cajun restaurant in Houston have an experimental Vietnamese cook at the helm...named Bubba?

John spoke last night at Mercer as part of a visit to the Southern Foodways class at Mercer. He decided to speak about a 20 some-year-old cook book called White Trash Cooking. Many received a copy of this book as a joke, but John used it as a scholarly work documenting a period of time for a group of people. He explored White Trash Cooking like your English professor would discuss Hamlet. It was an unexpected point-of-view on a book that was rejected by publishers repeatedly. Once it was printed, it became highly reguarded. Some worried the title was offensive. Others realized its power to shock and affect change. John even spoke at length about the shocking, honest nature of the photography in the book and how it might have referenced the work of James Agee and Walker Evans, Let Us Now Praise Famous Men: Three Tenant Families. The book is filled with traditional, Southern recipes. The kind of recipes you'd expect in the local Baptist church cookbook. The kind of recipes that worry not about calories or cholesterol, but instead concentrate on creating maximum flavor from things discarded by people of greater means. My favorite part of the story was the lawsuit threatened by the Junior League of Charleston because they felt the Opossum recipe was stolen from their cookbook.

I have been a fan of John's writings for some time. He has written for numerous magazines, written a few books, and even appeared as a guest judge on Iron Chef. He is also the director of the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi. Check out the links to see all John is doing. Last night was a great opportunity to merge my love of food and photography.

This video was quite interesting to me when I watched it on another photographer's blog. It makes me realize where I should be spending my time. We all try different ideas to see what works. I know what works, but still I try new things. Maybe I should stick to what I know works?

Studio Remodel...Partial

Here is a shot of my studio part way through the remodel. I've been planning for more than 6 months, so it is amazing to see it approaching completion. I want the images I hang on the walls to be the focus, so everything (as much as possible) is white. There is a splash of orange to maintain the look of the logo. I'm still waiting on some very cool new frames and prints to complete the look. I'm really pleased with progress. Please come by soon and take a look in person.

Character Approved

USA Network is running a series of ads about people notable in their fields for bucking trends called Character Approved.

One of particular interest to me was David Chang. He is the chef/owner of an Asian fusion restaurant in New York called Momofuku Ko. He has won notoriety by creating food he likes. He is less concerned about pleasing the customers than pleasing himself. A refined, specific approach to his food has allowed him to excel in a crowded marketplace. Momofuku Ko does not try to be all things to all people. "We don't do vegetarian."

He has several other restaurants including a bakery and milk bar called bakery and milk bar. Classic baked items such as Key Lime Pie share space next to unexpected twists such as Banana Green Curry Bread. They even have 4 different kinds of milk!

Being yourself is the only way to survive. It is a valuable lesson to any business owner...or person.

FREE Budget/Location Lighting Class

The next in the series of FREE Digital Photography Classes is a Budget/Location Lighting Class on February 19th from 6-8pm. We'll be covering how to create beautiful portrait lighting with very little money. The rig we will build (less than $250 with flash) will also be great for lighting on location. We'll discuss balancing fill and ambient light as well as overpowering ambient light. It will be 2 packed hours. The class is limited to 20 students, so email me to register.

No Matter How High You Climb...

As I have mentioned before, I love CBS Sunday Morning. This Sunday included a story on Walter Iooss (pronounced y-long o-s). He is a renowned sport and portrait photographer. He is best known for his work on the iconic Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, but that is not what I found interesting.

Iooss has spent decades photographing athletes and models to great acclaim. He has photographed some of the greatest athletes we have ever known. He even got to photograph Yogi Berra and Whitey Ford. It is a very cool image. It shows two greats many years in age in uniforms similar to those worn during their time with the Yankees. Why do I love it? They hate it. Yogi and Whitey hate the image. They think it is very unflattering.

No matter how great you are...someone is there to tear you down. You have to have a very thick skin.

A Weekend of Wishes

Joy, wedding assistant extraordinaire, is expecting her second child in a few weeks. She is ready to meet her child face-to-face. So, Saturday night, we ( Joy, her husband, my wife, and myself) made the journey to Scalini's in Smyrna. As many of you know, I worked there in college. Many of you might also know of its special claim to fame. The eggplant parmigiana has magical powers. It causes women to give birth within 48 hours of eating the massive plate of breaded eggplant covered in marinara and cheese. The myth has been featured in Southern Living, the New York Times, and on Good Morning America but to name a few.

We are only 24 hours in, and I can't wait to see what the next 24 hold. If my time at Scalini's is any indication, we will have a new addition very soon.

Krystal Lovers!

I found out today that a couple, whose wedding I photographed, was one of the five winners of the Krystal Lovers Love Story contest. I thought having your Krystal story on the side of Krystal box would be cool, but to be one of this five would be every better. Best of all, they will receive a $100 gift card and "romantic" dinner complete with white tablecloth and candles at Krystal. Congrats guys...and I agree whole-heartedly with Paul.

Soup Weather

I might be a wedding photographer, but I'm really a closet 50s housewife. I love to cook. While easy has its occasional appeal, I prefer doing things from scratch. I love making cinnamon rolls from scratch. I love making pizza with my own dough. I've even made sausage from scratch (ground the meat, added spices and stuffed it into natural casings).

Tonight, I decided soup would be appropriate considering the cold, rainy night. After a quick trip to Fresh Market, I began the multi-hour process. After the chopping, simmering, and seasoning, I had a pot of thick, meaty black bean soup. It wasn't pretty, but it was really good...if I do say so myself.

The 6 o'clock stitch is the brain child of Gina. She creates unique, personalized toys, blankets, and berries (crib shoes). Each is beautifully detailed from a variety of trendy fabrics. They are super cute, and I know many of them will make it to my house. Best of all, she uses Etsy to make it easy to order. Etsy is like eBay for artists. One of the most difficult tasks I face when painting a room in my home or designing a marketing piece is choosing the right colors. Which colors go together? Do those colors clash? Is that tacky?

Adobe (as they are known for doing) has solved this problem. They created Kuler. Kuler has thousands of color themes submitted by designers from around the world. Each theme contains 5 complementary swatches to give you a variety of options. You can even search for a particular color or idea. Do you need a blue color? Do you need colors that feel airy? Want a modern color pallet?

Didn't find what you need? You can create your own theme and submit for others to enjoy. The tools on the website help you find complementary colors based on a color of your choice. It can be very easy to use or allow you to completely geek out.

Adobe might be taking over the world, but I'm OK with that.

NEW FREE CLASS

First, I wanted to thank everyone who came last night for the Adobe Camera RAW class. It was a lot of fun for me. I hope everyone learned something, or at least realized RAW isn't so scary.

Last night, I also announced the next in the series of FREE photography classes. The next is the Budget Lighting Class. We will cover building an inexpensive studio or location lighting rig. We'll also discuss how to use this rig to create a variety of looks. We'll even discuss using it in conjunction with daylight. This is a great class for those already using studio strobes or someone who would like to begin. This all takes place February 19th from 6-8pm.

DON'T FORGET!

The all day class is next Saturday. This class will cover digital photography, image manipulation, and output. It sounds like a lot, but it is geared towards amateurs. There are still some spaces available, so email to reserve your spot. The cost is $150 and includes lunch.

I Knew Her When

I just got to read a very funny essay by Allison Gaudet Yarrow printed in NEWSWEEK (yes, that Newsweek). She discusses her journey to find her own identity in the world. A Lesson We All Must Learn

I believe great lessons are learned during hard times. Hopefully these lessons remain when times are good. The lesson every photographer must learn is the equipment is a very small part of the resulting image. It is easier to create a great image with an unlimited amount of time and an unlimited amount of money. It is much more rewarding to create something amazing out of seemingly nothing. Photographers have a bad habit of believing their images will improve once they get that new super megapixel camera or very expense European studio lights. A great photographer can capture a compelling image with only a box and a sheet of film. Renoir not only believed that it could be done, but that it was better.

Artists or Technicians?

I enjoy watching CBS Sunday Morning. My first exposure to many amazing artists came while watching. This morning was no different...or, was it?

This morning included two glass "artists", Eric Markow and Thom Norris, who create woven glass sculptures. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. They weave glass like it is yarn. How do they do that? They won't tell. It's a secret.

***Soapbox Warning***

If the technique makes them special, they are technicians. If it is the art, they are artists. I personally think both are amazing, but they have chosen to make the technique an issue. Why must they protect their secret technique? Is there anything else? Would anyone care if they were making more traditional sculptures? I have said before and will say again that it is not the tool or technique that makes an artist exceptional. Anyone can learn a technique. It is the life of experiences housed between the artist's ears that make them special.

I LOVE Ikea!

As many of you know, I have had a many year love affair with Ikea. I remember my first trip to Ikea in Emeryville, California. I remember wishing I had a bigger suitcase. I remember understanding why Ikea had a restaurant. I remember the time before Ikea opened in Atlanta.

I thought I loved Ikea, but there are people who are even more devoted.

Ikeahacker is a blog filled with amazing, unexpected inventions created from different Ikea products. Who knew you could make a dog bowl from a stool or a modern art sculpture from bookshelves. Some of my other favorites are the laptop stand made from a paper towel holder, installation art made from shelves, and a pinhole camera from wooden planters. Each hack is submitted by regular people from around the world who are trying to fill a need. It is inspirational.

I now walk the aisles at Ikea looking at things with new eyes. Maybe one day I'll create something worthy of Ikeahacker.

A Nugget From Thursday Night

One of the very cool things we covered Thursday night at the Digital Photography Class, was Adobe Express. It is a FREE online image editing application. Imagine Photoshop lite for FREE. It provides all the basic and not-so-basic tools you need to fine tune your images. You can make color and tone adjustments, create amazing black and white images, and even retouch zits. The finished images can be downloaded to your computer or loaded directly to your favorite social networking website (Facebook, Flickr, etc). I would check out Adobe Express before spending money on anything else.

What I Did Last Night

I had dinner with some great photographers who happen to be great friends. It was 2 hours of sharing ideas, answering questions, and great pizza. We met at Mellow Mushroom in Warner Robins. I was a Mellow virgin. Now I know the joys of the Mushroom. That being said...I'm still partial to Ingleside Village Pizza, but Warner Robins lacks such pleasures.

I count these friendships as a huge part of my success. No man (or photographer) is an island. It takes a village. People need people. (Don't you love platitudes.) Truly, though, I wouldn't be half the photographer without them. I am constantly inspired by them, and I hope that I inspire them on occasion. Thank you guys!

Who Will Save Will Robinson?

Bob May passed away Sunday. He was the actor that brought to life the robot on the 60s hit "Lost in Space." While he wasn't the voice, he was responsible for the characteristic arm flailing.

I mention it because I was raised on sci-fi movies from the 50s and 60s. I spent many afternoons transported to far-off times and far-off worlds. "Lost in Space" was always a favorite. I loved how they were able to create different planets on a single soundstange with a very meager budget. It makes new sci-fi movies seem sad. "Lost in Space" is a timeless treasure;so few others are.

Mr. May will be missed.

Bridal Show Debriefing

The Power of Relationships

My wife and I always park at PreFlight when we fly from Atlanta. It is an off-site parking lot with shuttle service to the airport. It is cheaper than parking at the airport and very convenient. This trip, the driver mentioned that he remembered me from my trip to Tampa last year for the Imaging USA conference (the same conference from which I just returned). He remembered my traveling companions (Danielle Bodony and Stephanie Gober) and why we were going to Tampa. He remembered that we were all photographers. I thought that was pretty amazing. He must see hundreds of faces every day and yet he remember me.

When we landed in Atlanta last night, we had the same driver! It might seem like a little thing, but it was comforting to know with whom we were entrusting our lives. He was friendly, jovial, and helpful. As I have said before, I shouldn't be amazed by someone doing there job well, but I am. Thank you to our driver (whose name I do not know) for being a welcoming face for our return to the South.

Phoenix: Day 5 OR Macon or Bust

We are on our way home. It will be nice to be home, but I'm not looking forward to the weather. It is 74 in Phoenix today. It will be in the 30s when I wake up tomorrow in Macon! I can't wait to get home and start putting into motion all the truly great things I have learned. See you soon!

Phoenix: Day 4

So, today was yet another amazing day. Unfortunately, it was the last day. I have gotten so many good ideas and I can't wait to share them with all of you. Keep tuned to the blog for the latest updates. It is going to be an unbelievable year!

As part of my desire to find the best local joints (and because we are in Phoenix and I'm obsessed with Mexican food), we decided to have dinner at Carolina's Mexican Restaurant. It has been a top pick in Phoenix for years. It was short on atmosphere, but it made up for it with the food. We go to all the best places.

In the "truly weird" coumn, mark Carolina's. Not only did she has Coke AND Pepsi, but also Agua Fresca. For those who haven't had the pleasure, you should. It is a barely sweet mix on fruit juices and water. It is my first choice when available.

We'll be flying home tomorrow, so we'll just have to see when I fit in my post.

Phoenix: Day 3

I am amazed that themes in my life have a way of repeating. This evening I had the opportunity to listen to Anne Geddes speak for an hour-and-a-half about her life and career. I wasn't really excited, but I knew this was a rare chance to listen to someone very successful, tell her story. Needless to say, it was quite pleasurable and informative. She told about the night she decided she wanted to be the most famous children's photographer in the world...and told her friends and family! She told how she was turned down by large publishing companies. She told how she printed her first calendar on her own and has gone on to sell millions around the world.

I was very impressed and completely surprised.

I had a very similar experience when I visited the Salvador Dali Museum. All I knew of his work was melting clocks. The docent explained Dali's influences. She explained the world going on around Dali. She explained how his contemporaries were reacting to their surroundings.

I had a new found appreciation for his work.

I find that the WHY is as important as the WHAT. I need to understand why an artist used a color. I need to understand why they chose a particular media. I need to understand why they chose the imagery they used.

Sometimes a melting clock is just a melting clock...some times it is a commentary on war.

Phoenix: Day 2

My day started at 5:20 MT. I don't remember the last time I was up that early. I was sitting in a large convention hall before 7 am with my Chai Tea Latte. The latte helped. Then began a day filled with learning. I've learned about Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop, wireless lighting, and portrait sales. It is a great deal to take in. I've already gotten some great ideas to introduce once I get back. Check the blog in the coming weeks for updates.

So, what does a $13 hot dog look like?

It's called the "Big Unit" at Alice Cooper's Town. It is a 2 FOOT long hot dog covered with chili and cheese. It was very good, but, needless to say, I did not finish it. I'm not sure why it comes with fries. Does anyone eat the fries? I'm glad I did it, but I won't do it again.

We also spent part of this afternoon at the Heard Museum. It is filled with artifacts and art from the local native people. The museum contains examples of pots, baskets, and tools created as early 500 AD. I never get tired of viewing items that were made before we were a country.

Phoenix: Day 1

We made several discoveries today.

1. Phoenix is beautiful!

2. People in Phoenix are surprisingly friendly (Being from the South, I was raised to believe that only Southerners were friendly).

3. Vegan food is REALLY good. Green Restaurant

4. The bus system is....well.... (Being Southern, I was raised not to say anything if I couldn't say something nice).

Phoenix or Bust!

I'm leaving today for Imaging USA in Phoenix. Imaging is the convention for the Professional Photographers of America. I take time each year to recharge my creative batteries and learn more about running a photography business. Each year I find new ideas and products to offer in the coming year. I'm really excited to see what I find and learn this year. I'll be posting pictures of my adventure while I'm gone, so check back.

I'll be back in the studio on Thursday, but I'll be available by phone or email in the mean time.

Free RAW Workflow Class

As part of my ongoing FREE classes, I have scheduled the Adobe Camera RAW class for January 29th from 6-8pm.

This class will cover using Adobe Bridge and Camera RAW to quickly organize and edit large numbers of images. Topics include tone and color correction, retouching, localized changes, and creative finishing. This class will be taught with CS4, but most techniques will apply to older versions of Camera RAW and Lightroom. It will be a great opportunity to start the transition to shooting RAW.

Sunday Makeup

I spent a great deal of Sunday working on my print display for the Macon's Wedding Ring Bridal Show on January 18th. I was inspired on Saturday while riding to Atlanta to try something REALLY different. It is actually quite funny because I almost ordered everything from my original idea Friday night. It will be VERY different. For those who don't see it in person, I'll post pictures the week after the show. I hope many of you get to see it in person.

Saturday Makeup!

If I were on a diet and fell off the wagon, I would have to exercise more to make up for it. So, here is the blog post from Saturday if I had posted it.

I went on a shopping trip to Atlanta. I had two main goals. First, I needed supplies for my first attempt at book binding. I decided I wanted to offer a "natural", hand made album, so I needed stuff to start the learning process. I've already found sources online to get the materials once I work out the details, but I didn't want to go through the hassle of ordering, shipping, etc. There are two great stores in Atlanta that have such items-Sam Flax and Paper Source. I found most of what I needed and a few things I didn't . The Paper Source store is located in the Virginia Highlands neighborhood. VH is a great place to waste an afternoon. I highly recommend Murphy's for brunch!

We finished up the day at Ikea. I needed chairs for my FREE photography classes. Best of all, they were only $5.99 each. Of course, we found even more stuff we didn't need. You gotta love Ikea.

I spent most of yesterday in a semi-comatose state watching the day long Twilight Zone marathon on the SciFi channel. It is a childhood guilty pleasure that my wife has thankfully discovered and learn to love herself. I saw episodes new to me as well as old favorites which were just as great as the first time I saw them. I noticed themes in Rod Serling's writing that escaped me as a child but now seem real. He dealt with the cold war and nuclear holocaust, while we are struggling with terrorism. Still true are the universal themes of wanting what once was, fearing the unknown, and wishing for the courage to change. It was a thought inspiring day. For those who haven't had the distinct pleasure, you can watch some episodes on CBS.com. "Time Enough at Last" is a great introduction into the twisted world of Rod Serling.

Best of all, there were commercials for the new Twilight Zone: The Complete Definitive Collection. It is a DVD box set with ALL 156 original episodes. FREE PHOTOGRAPHY CLASSES!

I would do it for free if I could...so, I will. I'm starting off the new year with a series of free photography classes. These will be short (2 hour) classes covering a variety of specific subjects. The schedule will begin with an intro to digital photography class (Thursday, January 22, 2009 @ 6pm), but in coming months we will cover such subjects as available light photography, studio lighting on a budget, Adobe Camera Raw, and photography for real estate agents. Each class will be limited to 20 students, so make sure to register early.

I will also be offering day long intensive classes for those who want to learn more about a particular subject. The first of these classes will be the popular Digital Photography for Soccer Mom's (Saturday, February 7, 2009, 9am-4pm). This class will include a photo safari and well as classroom instruction. We will cover image capture, backup, manipulation, and printing...basically a workflow from beginning to end. The total cost is $150 (lunch included). Those who book by December 31st will receive a $25 discount. This would make a great gift idea for the budding photographer or soccer mom in your family.

Ashes and Snow

It is funny how you have to hear about something more than once for it to stick.

Several months ago, CBS Sunday Morning (One of my all time favorites!) featured Gregory Colbert's Nomadic Museum in New York. It was amazing. He had a temporary museum built form shipping containers on a pier. It was filled with large format prints of his haunting images featuring children with wild animals. The images had an unreal quality. They seemed not possible.

Last week, I visited the amazing studio of Zack Arias, music photographer extraordinarie. He had a display of his favorite photography books (I'm totally copying this for the studio remodel). One of them was a book filled with Colbert's work. It was a book covered in hand made Nepalese paper tied with a string, and the images were printed on fine art paper in Italy. It was one of the most beautiful books I'd ever seen.

So, the very next day I started searching for a copy of the book. Apparently, Zack's version is no longer in print, but I was able to find another version. It arrived today. WOW!

Hopefully, I will be able to create a version to use for portrait sessions and weddings. Stay tuned.

A funny discovery. The iPhone knows the word y'all. I was surprised that people in California even new that word. My thanks to the engineers at Apple for including the South in the iPhone dictionary.

San Francisco or Bust!

My wife and I are going to San Francisco at the end of the month for a little work/pleasure. It's been 5 years since we last visited and we're really excited about returning. It is a beautiful city with a perfect climate.

The Passing of a Institution

Bill Meriwether passed away Sunday.

If you had not had the pleasure, he was THE photographer in Macon for almost 50 years. (He actually photographed my in-laws' wedding.) He was a sweet man who spent his life gladly sharing his knowledge with anyone who asked. I only had the joy of meeting Mr. Meriwether one time. He shared a lighting technique with me that I still use to this today. It was a little thing, that made a big impression.

He will be greatly missed.

How Little Does It Take?

I love out-of-focus, overexposed images. It is weird fetish, but it allows me to find gems where others would see only trash. Because of this unusual fascination, I started wondering how little visual information is needed for the viewer to know what is in the image.

Can a few black lines portray a person?

I've been a fan of Hitchcock since I was a kid. The caricature of him has always been a part of my visual reference. It is perfect. Not too much...not too little. The artist included everything needed with nothing extra. The ability to edit ones work is an important skill for any artist.

I notice the Hitchcock caricature finds it's way into my work on occasion. I am always looking for simple, graphic images that contain more information than would immediately seem. Recently, I captured this image at a wedding. I told the bride her mother might not recognize her, but I'm really pleased with it.

Fancy Book Learning

I spent yesterday in Atlanta learning more about Photoshop with two great friends from one of the most accomplished Photoshop trainers, Dave Cross. Heather and Jenny are both accomplished photographers and even better road trip companions. We had a great time and learned some great new tricks in Photoshop. (The photo is thanks to my iPhone. Great phone. Not a great camera.)

Inkjeteuos Home Printian Period

One of my daily rituals is to read What the Duck. It is an online comic strip about a duck who is a professional photographer (I think I actually blogged about this once before). It is really funny. Well, it is really funny if you are a photographer. The most recent strip is actually appropriate for non-professionals.

I have always said that printing on your home inkjet printer is a futile endeavor. I won't even do it. Fortunately, there are several labs locally, that will print your digital images. USE THEM!
